Well, what an interesting week it has been, both for New Zealand and Australian politics.

It has also been heartbreaking hearing about the evolving situation in Gaza. Our hearts go out to all those affected by the attacks.

With all of the goings on in world, we are doing what we can to stay positive in our corner and continuing with our mission to save the planet, one tree at a time.

Spring has sprung!

The longer days and sunshine have been a real treat. An indication of what is to come.

Here at FuturEcology, we have had a very good month, working on projects all over the Top of the South, enjoying working in the sunshine and expanding networks. We have also taken on some exciting new projects for the coming year which we look forward to sharing with you.

The June solstice on Thursday the 22nd of June is 5 hours and 4 minutes shorter in terms of daylight hours than the summer solstice in New Zealand.

We have reached the milestone of two million EmGuards sold this month! Here Emma shares her thoughts about the journey from the first spark of an idea to this point.

Just like that, May has flown by and what a great month it has been. The planting season has been off to a great start, and we couldn’t ask for a better team for the job.

And just like that it is mid-autumn.

This time of year is just stunning, with the trees changing colour and crisper mornings alluding to winter just around the corner. For the conservation industry, this is an exciting time of year as we are finishing our site prep and starting to put plants in the ground.

We can’t believe how quickly the days are getting shorter and are certainly enjoying that lovely crispness in the morning followed by some gorgeous days, but oh my goodness, have the wasps exploded in the last few weeks.

Mid-February already and what a month it has been! Drought, flooding and cyclones are just some of the challenges. The country doesn’t seem to be catching a break. Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by these unprecedented events.

The team at FuturEcology have been involved in restoration work in the Waimea Estuary, trying to re-introduce glasswort (Sarcocornia quinqueflora), a species of succulent halophytic coastal shrub, and other saltmarsh species such as oioi, Juncus krausii and saltmarsh ribbonwood to an area of old gravel pit and road.

It’s that time of year again when we are on the rapid slide to Christmas and it’s a good time to reflect and review 2022.

What an incredible month it has been. Dunedin shivering in snow last week and Nelson suffering a river of rain three weeks ago. It certainly makes for interesting, if somewhat challenging times.

The Ōhau Conservation Trust has planted about 3500 native plants alongside Lakes Ōhau and Middleton in the last 10 or so years. The Trust started using EmGuards in 2019, after deciding the days of plastic and wire plant protectors were over!
